Mapping Data

Browsing the data types does not require a quad selection. |
Choosing a DEP quad may help narrow your data search.
There are 2 ways to choose a DEP quad number:
Choose it visually from a map.

About the Data
USGS 7.5-Minute SDTS DEM 30-Meter
A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is a digital representation of the contours of the Earth's surface.
The information is derived from elevation measurements at regularly spaced intervals.
This data is published by the USGS and covers a 7.5-minute area with 30-meter resolution.
Special Software Needed
These files are in STDS format and must be converted to DEM before using.
STDS to DEM Conversion Program
WinZip will uncompress the .gz format
Additional software is needed to use the DEM

DLGs are text files and must be converted into graphic format before being used in a GIS. There are many
conversion programs available. Usually a GIS will provide its own DLG conversion utility.

About the Data
A digital raster graphic (DRG) is a scanned image of a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) topographic map.
The scanned image includes all map collar information. The image inside the map neatline is georeferenced to the surface of the Earth. The DRG can be used to collect, review, and revise other digital data, especially digital line graphs (DLG). When
the DRG is combined with other digital products, such as digital orthophoto quadrangles (DOQ) or digital elevation models (DEM),
the resulting image provides additional visual information
for the extraction and revision of base
cartographic information.

What is the difference between an aerial photograph and an orthophoto?
A conventional perspective aerial photograph contains image displacements caused by the tilting of the camera and terrain relief (topography). It does not have a uniform scale. You cannot measure distances on an aerial photograph like you can on a map. It is not a map.
The effects of tilt and relief are removed from the aerial photograph by the rectification process to create an orthophoto.
An orthophoto is a uniform-scale photograph. It is a photographic map.
Since an orthophoto has a uniform scale, it is possible to measure directly on it like other maps.
An orthophoto may serve as a base map onto which other map information may be overlaid.
