To see the Benchmarks on the County GIS site you must click on “Enter Mapping Site” and accept the disclaimer.
Then on the far right of the site the second listing under layers says “Benchmarks”, you must click on that layer and make it active. If you then click on the “Refresh Map’ button the interactive map will regen and have purple triangles all over the western portion of the County. [The heavily habitated portion of the county.] Then on the left pick the black i icon and pick one of the purple triangles and a window will pop up with all the benchmark data.
If any one wants benchmarks in the eastern portion of the county they will have to navigate to the SWFWMD data site or go to the NGS site for the NGS runs along SR 74 (Bermont Rd.) or SR 31.
Instructions for Finding
Benchmarks on InfoMap
Enter Orange County "InfoMap"
The Orange County 88 Datum Benchmark Network is now available to the public on Infomap through the Orange County Website.
On Infomap, you will find a selection of Map Layers. The benchmark network can be found under the Land Development Layer.
Here is
the link.
In order to see the marks, you need to do the following:
- Expand the Land Development folder, then expand the Survey folder beneath it.
- Locate the Layer called “Benchmarks (88 Datum)”.
- Click on the white box next to the layer and all the available benchmarks will appear as green points.
To Select a benchmark from the screen:
- Zoom to the area of the county you are working in.
- Under the Layer List, click on the icon next to the check mark (a lower case i) for the benchmark layer and it will turn black. This makes the Benchmarks the active search layer.
- In the menu bar, click the pull down and select “Identification”. About the middle of the menu bar, you will see another lower case i with “Identify” beneath it. Click this icon.
- Now, you can select any one of the points on the screen, and the benchmark information will appear (please ensure that your web browser is set to allow pop-ups).
Also, in addition to the ability to search by Section, Intersection or Coordinates, this updated Infomap provides the user with the option of querying by Benchmark name. You can do this as follows:
- Across the top, there is a menu bar. Look for the box that is labeled “Navigation”, with a down arrow next to it.
- Click the arrow to open the pull down menu, and select “Identification” as your search method.
- To the far right, you will see the “Query” option. Select it.
- You are then asked to choose a value. Click the down arrow and scroll to “Benchmarks (88Datum). Here you will see the choices you have to search by.
- Click the Down arrow next to the box that says “Description_1”, select “Point_1”, and in the third box, type in the name of the benchmark you are searching for without any dashes or spaces. (Note: for marks that begin with TP or U, for example, you must include the dash, i.e. TP-4202 or U-42. For GIS points, just input the point number, i.e., GIS 105 should be input as 105 in the search engine.)
- Below the Layer List, in the Selection area, there will be a box that says Report. Click here to show the details of the benchmark you just searched for.
- In the report window, click Zoom to Feature, and it will zoom to the object you have selected.
Most County established marks have an identifier which looks like: S-1037-001. The alpha character represents
the first letter of the Party Chief’s last name, the second set of numbers represent the bench run number and the last set of digits represent the turn number. The following gives the time frame when a mark was first established. This can be useful when looking for marks which still may be intact.
D-01 – B-79 (1976-1979)
B-80 – S-634 (1980-1989)
D-636 – S-1037 (1990-1999)
C-1038 – S-1541 and beyond (2000-present)
Hopefully, this information will be of use to all in the Survey Community. If you happen to find a benchmark that is destroyed, please report it to the Orange County Survey Department via email to Icie.Washington@ocfl.net . I will be the one maintaining the database. It will be updated quarterly, so any destroyed or disturbed benchmarks that are reported will be removed from the database in the next update, as well as new benchmarks added, and coordinates adjusted. Feel free to contact me with any questions.
***DISCLAIMER***
The Coordinates found on Infomap are approximated, and the locations of the benchmarks may vary from where they appear on Infomap. These coordinates are not to be used as exact locations, only as a general starting point from which to locate the benchmark. Orange County can not be held responsible if the coordinates found on Infomap are used in any other manner.
