You are about to enter an FTP site. The folders are organized by 250K and 100K quad sheet names and files are identified by DEP quad numbers. Files are in *.zip format.

About the Data
The original DLGs were created from published quad sheets as they existed in 1990.

Projection: UTM Projection (Zone 16 is west of 84ยบ longitude; 17 is east)
Datum: NAD27
Units: Meters
File Type: ASCII (Text) Format

Some DLGs have been revised since their original creation. For more information on this topic, see the paper explaining DLG Revisions.

These files are available in two packages:
By Individual Quad - The individual quads' .zip files are organized by 100K sheets.

By 250K Sheet - Download all 1:24,000 dlg files for a 250k quad area in one file. The 1:24,000 dlg files can be accessed individually once the .zip file is downloaded and unzipped.
Determining the File Name
You will need to know the 250K and 100K quad names and the DEP quad number. Use the
Quad Name Locator
to find this information.

The file names are comprised of the theme abbrevation plus the DEP quad number.

THEMES:
BND = Political Boundaries
HYD = Hydrography
PIP = Pipelines
RDS = Roads
RRS = Railroads

Downloading Instructions
These files are small enough to download easily, but if you experience difficulty, using FTP is recommended.

These files are available on CD for $25 each. (A CD holds about one-third of the state.)

Special Software Needed
  • DLGs are text files and must be converted into graphic format before being used in a GIS. There are many conversion programs available. Usually a GIS will provide its own DLG conversion utility.
  • WinZip will uncompress the .zip format
